STUTTGART, Germany — The armored 2013 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Guard debuted on Tuesday, starting at the U.S. equivalent of $136,705 for the ML350 Bluetec Guard.

The uplevel Mercedes-Benz ML500 Guard starts at the U.S. equivalent $154,403. In comparison, the base 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML350 in the U.S. starts at $50,675, including a $905 destination charge.

The Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec Guard and ML500 Guard ride on run-flat tires and feature a "comprehensive protection system against ballistic attacks," according to Daimler. The run-flat tires make it possible to drive safely for up to 19 miles at speeds of 50 mph, even if the tire is entirely flat.

The windows in the five-passenger vehicles have a polycarbonate layer on the inside for protection against shards. Daimler said the vehicles provide "ballistic resistance" to such weapons as a Magnum .357 and .44, along with blasts from a DM51 hand grenade. Steel is used to reinforce the passenger area and boost the SUV's structural firmness.

There is no skimping on amenities, either. The armored SUVs get leather trim in the cabin, along with infotainment systems and high-end sound systems.

The ML350 Bluetec Guard is equipped with a 258-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, while the ML500 Guard is equipped with a 408-hp 4.7-liter V8 engine. Both get the 7G-Tronic Plus transmission.

The armored M-Class hits the market on March 15, joining a growing list of armored Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard and the G500 Guard.

Edmunds says: With Mercedes-Benz now offering nine special-protection models, it's clear that this is a key part of the German automaker's game plan.
