HERNDON, Virginia — Audi will introduce 4G LTE high-speed wireless connectivity on the 2015 Audi A3 sedan next spring, Audi of America told Edmunds on Monday.
The technology debuted on the Audi S3 Sportback in Europe on Monday.
Pricing for the 4G LTE wireless connectivity has not been announced, said Andrew Lipman, a spokesman for Audi of America.
Audi AG said it is the first carmaker to bring the fast LTE data transfer standard to a car with full integration. It is optional on the S3 Sportback in Europe. European pricing was not announced. The LTE standard, which stands for Long Term Evolution, takes mobile Internet to a new level. When passengers connect their mobile end devices to the WLAN hotspot integrated into the car, they can surf the Web independently of each other.
"For example, one passenger can participate in a video conference while another watches a video," said Audi in a statement.
Facebook and Twitter have been made "vehicle-friendly," says Audi, with a text-to-speech function.
The LTE standard is expected to be available on a widespread basis by the end of 2014.
Edmunds says: Audi races to the head of the connectivity pack. Expect others to follow.
