INDIANAPOLIS — Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, will pace the 2013 Indianapolis 500 on Sunday in a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

GM said in a statement on Wednesday that Harbaugh "personifies the Indianapolis 500's spirit of competition." Harbaugh took the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012.

"As a longtime racing fan and someone who has always followed the Indianapolis 500, the honor to drive the pace car comes as a tremendous thrill," said Harbaugh in a statement released by GM. "Doing it in the 2014 Corvette Stingray makes it even better. It's an iconic car leading an iconic race."

Harbaugh is a principal at Panther Racing, which fields the two-car, Chevrolet-powered IndyCar team with drivers J.R. Hildebrand and Townsend Bell.

Last year, celebrity chef Guy Fieri, who has been described as a "culinary rock star," paced the Indianapolis 500 in a 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

Edmunds says: Probably a much less controversial pick than Guy Fieri.
