LONDON Car shoppers are just getting to know the redesigned 2014 Mini Cooper, but the 2020 version is already in development, Edmunds has learned.

Future plans for the upcoming fourth-generation car may include a pure electric version, insiders told Edmunds.

Buyers will also see a combination of new high-tech materials and smaller engines.

The 2020 Mini could deviate from the successful formula developed for its predecessors. The First BMW Mini, launched in 2001, has provided the template for the second and third editions. Well-placed insiders believe that with Mini re-established as a highly successful global brand, there is now scope to take advantage of new technologies, allowing the car to evolve.

No specifics have been revealed officially at this point. But a combination of high-tech materials, physically smaller engines and electrification could enable the car to be more space-efficient and lighter. Parent BMW has fast-growing expertise in carbon fiber and electric powertrains with its new i brand.

However, the car will remain unmistakably a Mini and perhaps philosophically closer to the 1959 Austin-Morris original because its engineering could be more radical.

BMW is also mulling changes to the scope of the Mini range on the long-term, most likely by offering slightly fewer models than today.

Edmunds says: Now that it has firmly established the new Mini, BMW may dare to refresh the core hatchback model with a more radical approach. But it will be equally keen to retain its unique and winning "Mini-ness."

It seems odd that Mini keeps getting bigger. They need to make a smaller city car and slot it below the original in the lineup. I thought they were working on one. Also, I wouldn't call BMW's work on EVs "expertise" as in the article. Small cars are proving to be a real challenge for BMW.
