MAHWAH, New Jersey — The 2016 Jaguar XE compact sedan will debut on September 8 in London and arrive at U.S. dealerships in 2016, the automaker announced on Monday.

Jaguar Land Rover revealed details on the XE's advanced suspension and chassis technology, promising that the car "dynamically outperforms our rivals."

The Jaguar XE targets the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The XE is the first Jaguar vehicle to be equipped with the latest generation Electric Power Assisted Steering or EPAS.

EPAS "allows a much greater scope for tuning than hydraulic-based systems," the automaker said in a statement. "Benefits include excellent steering feel, variable steering damping, ease of low-speed maneuvering and the ability to adapt to Jaguar Drive Control settings. EPAS also enables a range of Driver Aid features."

The XE's front suspension is based on the design used in the Jaguar F-Type sports car.

"Mounted to a subframe with cast aluminum suspension towers, the double wishbone of the front suspension on the XE delivers exceptional handling and road holding," the automaker said.

At the rear is an Integral Link suspension as opposed to a multilink design.

"By providing lateral and longitudinal stiffness, the Integral Link delivers sharp response and handling while retaining a refined, luxurious ride," according to Jaguar Land Rover.

The XE also will feature All Surface Progress Control, a new rear-wheel-drive traction system.

"The system works like a low-speed cruise control to improve forward progress under slippery conditions," the automaker said.

Jaguar Land Rover has been slowly revealing key details about the XE. This will be the first Jaguar product built on the company's new aluminum architecture that was featured in the Jaguar C-X17 concept car in 2013.

Pricing has not been announced. The XE will go on sale in 2015 in Europe.

Edmunds says: The countdown clock has started for the unveiling of the highly anticipated Jaguar XE.
