GOTHENBURG, Sweden — The 2015 Volvo XC90 will showcase new safety features and technologies, as well as moving the automaker closer to a self-driving car.

A new, patented safety cage has been made "stronger and smarter," Volvo said.

Camera, radar and sensor technologies are extended to detect more objects around the car.

The 2015 XC90 benefits from the automaker's new Scalable Product Architecture, or SPA. The architecture provides the basis for future self-driving Volvos.

"The new SPA architecture enables significant improvements both when it comes to offering protection in worst-case scenarios and when creating innovative features that support the driver in avoiding accidents," Volvo said in a statement on Thursday.

It added: "The Scalable Product Architecture is also designed to accommodate the implementation of autonomous technologies all the way to self-driving cars."

The architecture features a new electrical setup that "elevates the car's intelligence level significantly," Volvo said.

The setup allows the automaker to add new technology in "fast-moving areas," including microprocessor, sensor and camera technology.

Rearward-facing radar in the car will be used to detect a rear impact and allow the seatbelts to be tightened in advance. Adaptive Cruise Control with steer assist will be introduced in the 2015 XC90, allowing the car to automatically follow the vehicle ahead in queues.

The Volvo Concept XC Coupe, which will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show , hints at the 2015 XC90.

Edmunds says: The building blocks of a self-driving Volvo are a key part of the 2015 Volvo XC90.
