ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2015 Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Golf GTI earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 2014 Top Safety Pick+ award for good performance in crash tests.

The redesigned Golf and Golf GTI have not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2015 Golf GTI arrived at dealer showrooms over the Memorial Day weekend and the Golf market introduction is set for August.

The award applies to the Golf and GTI with optional forward collision warning.

The small cars earned "good" scores in IIHS crash tests, including the small overlap front crash test. The test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn a good or acceptable rating for small overlap protection and a good rating in four other tests. The "plus" is awarded to vehicles that meet those criteria and also earn a rating of basic or higher for front crash prevention.

"In the small overlap test, the driver's space was maintained well and injury measures recorded on the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity," the IIHS said in a statement on Tuesday. "While the dummy's head nearly slid off the left side of the airbag, the side curtain airbag deployed to protect the head from contacting side structure and outside objects."

All 2015 Golf and Golf GTI models are equipped with standard electronic stability control and six airbags. The SE and SEL models feature an optional Driver Assistance package that includes forward collision warning and front and rear Park Distance Control systems.

Key competitors to the Golf and Golf GTI include the 2014 Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Mazda 3 and Subaru Impreza.

Edmunds says: Some important safety information for car shoppers considering the 2015 Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI.
