IRVINE, California The 2015 Kia Forte sedan starts at $16,690, including an $800 destination charge, reflecting a $10 price cut over the 2014 model.

The slight price cut reflects Kia's intention to have the lowest starting price in the segment, wrote James Hope, a Kia Motors America spokesman, in response to an Edmunds query.

"According to our analysis, this reduction gives us the lowest starting price in the segment," Hope wrote.

It's too early for car shoppers to know if that is the reality in the showroom, however. Pricing has not been announced yet on most of the Forte's key competition, including the 2015 Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla.

Kia's U.S. marketing strategy is an interesting one, given that the Korean automaker is strengthening the low end of its lineup with the modest price cut on the Forte, while at the same time extending the high end of its lineup with offerings such as the 2015 Kia K900. The 2015 K900 V8 starts at $60,400, including a $900 destination charge.

The 2015 Kia Forte, Forte Koup and Forte Five-Door are on their way to U.S. dealerships, Hope said. The vehicles were redesigned for the 2014 model year. The 2015 models are carryover.

The top-of-the-line 2015 Kia Forte EX sedan starts at $20,190, including shipping.

The 2015 Kia Forte Five-Door hatchback starts at $20,490, including an $800 destination charge, also reflecting a $10 price reduction over the 2014 model.

The 2015 Kia Forte Koup, a two-door coupe, starts at $19,390, including shipping, also reflecting a $10 price reduction over the 2014 model.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers will have to wait until other automakers release 2015 pricing before determining whether the 2015 Kia Forte has bragging rights to the lowest starting price in the segment.
