DETROIT — The top-of-the-line 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 performance coupe starts at $78,995, including a $995 destination charge, while the convertible model starts at $83,995, including shipping, GM announced on Friday.

Dealers will start taking orders for the Z06 in the fourth quarter, with deliveries expected in January, Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran told Edmunds.

The base 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray starts at $53,995, including shipping. Chevrolet dealers are taking orders for the base Corvette now with deliveries slated for September.

The Corvette Z06 was not offered during the 2014 model year. The 2013 Z06 started at $76,595.

Doran explained the overall 2015 Corvette pricing strategy as attempting to "deliver customers more performance per dollar than ever before."

He added: "This new Z06 is right on top of the old Z06 in terms of pricing, but it delivers the performance capability of the Corvette ZR1, which ranged in price from $112,000 to $125,000."

The ZR1 is no longer offered. It ceased production in 2013.

Buyers can dress up the 2015 Z06 with a $2,995 Carbon Fiber Ground Effects package that adds a functional carbon- fiber front splitter, rocker panels and a larger rear spoiler.

A $7,995 Z07 Performance package adds Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that boost braking performance and aid handling. This package adds adjustable front and rear aerodynamic components to the Carbon Fiber Ground Effects package and Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires.

The standard Z06 includes a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent and a rear spoiler.

It is equipped with an all-new, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine rated at 650 horsepower.

The Corvette Z06 competes with the Ford Mustang GT500, Porsche 911 Turbo S and SRT Viper.

Edmunds says: Consumers should be pleased that the new 2015 Corvette Z06 is priced in the ballpark of the previous Z06.
