SHANGHAI, China — The 2014 Volkswagen iBeetle, a special model set for a rollout next year with a connection to Apple's iPhone, debuted at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.

VW says the iBeetle is one of the first cars in the world to have a "genuine integrative interface for the iPhone that was coordinated with Apple."

The interface is available as an app or as a standard feature of the iBeetle and iBeetle Convertible. Pricing on the special models was not announced. The iBeetle will hit showrooms in early 2014, said Volkswagen of America.

Apple is becoming a sought-after connection in the automotive world. In March, Ferrari announced that the 2013 Ferrari FF will get a pair of iPad Minis and Siri Eyes Free integration as standard equipment. The iPad Minis will be installed in the headrests as part of a new rear-seat entertainment package. Ferrari said it has started "working together on products" with Apple.

Volkswagen is jumping on the bandwagon, too, with the Shanghai announcement. The iBeetle models get a new docking station located on the dashboard.

"The iPhone simply snaps in to integrate it with the car," said Volkswagen in a statement. "Essentially, all iPhone functions can be used in the Beetle; the iPhone can be used to navigate, make calls hands-free, listen to music and more."

When the special app is launched on the iPhone, it can either connect the phone to the Beetle via the docking station or wirelessly.

This is the first Volkswagen to feature the new docking station and iPhone app.

The iBeetle sticks to the Apple palette as well. Exterior colors include Candy White, Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect, Black Monochrome, Deep Black Pearl Effect, Platinum Gray and Reflex Silver.

The cabin gets a customized shift lever grip, black sport seats in Vienna leather and contrasting seams in light Ceramique.

Standard features include 18-inch disc alloy wheels in Galvano Gray with chrome wheel covers and black door sill plates with the iBeetle signature.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Volkswagen iBeetle is designed to look and feel like a rolling iPhone.
