PIKES PEAK, Colorado — The 2014 Range Rover Sport set a new record for the fastest production SUV on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course, the company said on Thursday.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport completed the 12.42-mile Colorado course in 12:35.61. The SUV maintained an average speed of 59.17 mph on the course.

The automaker said the record was independently timed and sanctioned by Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The Range Rover Sport was driven by Paul Dallenbach, an American competition and stunt driver who was the overall winner of the Hill Climb three times.

"This is a hugely capable vehicle and I'm proud to have been part of demonstrating that by setting a new Pikes Peak record," he said in a statement released by Jaguar Land Rover.

The record-setting Range Rover Sport is equipped with a 510-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The company says a short documentary film will follow the record-setting event.

Edmunds says: A pretty impressive moment for the 2014 Range Rover Sport.
