FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Nissan is recalling 12,743 2014 Nissan Versa Notes because of problems with bolts, the automaker told Edmunds.

The majority of the recalled Versa Notes are in North America.

The lower body sill bolts may not have been properly tightened, and, in rare instances, could be missing.

In addition, the bolts holding the rear seatback latches may not be strong enough and need to be replaced.

"Due to a supplier issue that has since been corrected, the lower body sill bolts may not have been properly tightened, and, in rare instances, could be missing," said Nissan North America in a statement. "If these bolts become loose or are missing, it could affect the vehicle's rear-impact performance.

"In addition, on some of the potentially affected vehicles, the rear seat latch bolts may have been manufactured out of specification at the supplier. In vehicles with improperly manufactured bolts installed, the rear seats may not meet the applicable strength requirements under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards."

Nissan said it has not been notified of any accidents or injuries related to the problems with the Versa Note.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls in the U.S., had not posted any information about the recall as of early Wednesday.

The Versa Note is built in Mexico.

Nissan dealers will check the bolts and fix or replace them. The recall will begin in mid-August. Owners can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2014 Nissan Versa Note, you'll want to get it into your dealership as soon as you receive your recall notification.

So the worker in Mexico are not fitting the sill bolts properly and when they do have bolts for the rear seat they are too weak. Anybody want to bet that the bolt supplier is also outside the US?

  • Name ONE carmaker that uses any commodity item that IS made in the US. So what's your point?
