WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 290 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 cars because the front seatbelt anchor could come loose, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"In the affected vehicles, the front seatbelt anchor might not be installed correctly, allowing it to become loose in a crash," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the seatbelt anchor comes loose in the event of a crash, the occupant may not be properly secured, increasing the risk of injury."

The affected cars were built from April 11, 2013 through October 14, 2013. The problem was discovered during quality assurance inspections, the company told federal safety regulators.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will fix the front seatbelt anchor fitting. The recall is expected to begin in December. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550, it's time to call your dealer to make arrangements for repairs.
