ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is the newest member of the elite Top Safety Pick+ club, said the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on Tuesday.

The M-Class is the first Mercedes to earn the award since the IIHS began testing for small overlap protection in 2012.

The automaker reinforced the vehicle's door sills to improve occupant protection in small overlap front crashes for models built after August 2013.

The midsize luxury SUV earned the award for good performance in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and seat/head restraint evaluations, according to the IIHS. The IIHS added the small overlap front test to its lineup of vehicle evaluations last year. It replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object like a tree or a utility pole.

In that test, the IIHS said the driver's space in the M-Class was "maintained reasonably well."

Injury measures recorded on the crash-test dummy indicated that injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a crash of this severity, but the risk of significant injuries to the other body regions would be low.

"The dummy's head made good contact with the front airbag, which stayed in position during the crash," said the IIHS in a statement. "The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structures and outside objects."

The 2014 M-Class gets the top five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well.

Edmunds says: Some important new safety information for any consumer who has the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class on his or her shopping list.
