IRVINE, California — The redesigned 2014 Mazda 3 sedan bears a family resemblance to the Mazda 6 and is equipped with either a 155-horsepower SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a 184-hp SkyActiv-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Mazda's i-Eloop regenerative engine braking system is optional only on the top-of-the-line 2014 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring model with a 2.5-liter engine. The base Mazda 3 sedan with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gets either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual transmission is not available on the 2.5-liter four-cylinder model.

No details have been provided about the 2014 Mazdaspeed 3 at this point.

The 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback was unveiled in late June. Unofficial photos of the 2014 Mazda 3 sedan have been a staple on the Internet, but this is the first time Mazda has released a batch of official photos.

The new specifications on the 2014 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback also include fuel economy numbers from Mazda and some initial fuel economy numbers from the EPA.

The EPA says the 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 30 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway. When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the hatchback returns 29 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

In comparison, the 2013 Mazda 3 with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission returns 25 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Mazda says the base 2014 Mazda 3 sedan with the six-speed manual transmission returns 29 mpg in city driving and 41 mpg on the highway. The i-Eloop-equipped 2014 Mazda 3 returns 29 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway.

Pricing has not been announced on the 2014 Mazda 3. The car goes on sale in the U.S. in the fall. The Mazda 3 competes in a crowded market that includes the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Versa and Toyota Corolla.
