WASHINGTON — Kia is recalling 51,641 2014 Kia Soul hatchbacks because the steering gear assembly may separate, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"In the affected vehicles, the plug that secures the pinion gear to the steering gear assembly may loosen due to an improper application of thread-locking adhesive during the assembly process," NHTSA said in its summary of the problem. "As a result, the pinion gear can separate from the steering gear assembly, causing a loss of steering, thereby increasing the risk of a crash."

There are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall, Kia told federal safety regulators. There are three warranty claims linked to the recall.

Kia dealers will replace the pinion plug with a new pinion plug that has properly applied thread-locking adhesive.

The recall is expected to begin in July. Owners can contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2014 Kia Soul, it's time to get in touch with your dealer.
