WASHINGTON — The 2014 Hyundai Veloster earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Veloster received four stars in front and rollover crash tests and five stars in the side crash test.

The rating is noteworthy since this is the first time that the sporty hatchback has been rated under NHTSA's tougher tests and five-star rating system.

The 2014 Veloster has not been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Standard safety equipment on Veloster includes six airbags, including side curtain airbags, antilock brakes and stability control. A rearview camera, driver's blind-spot mirror and daytime running lights are now standard equipment on all Veloster models.

Competitors to the Veloster include the 2014 Honda CR-Z, Mini Cooper, Scion tC and Volkswagen Beetle.

Edmunds says: The Veloster goes to the head of the class, along with the Scion tC and VW Beetle, with this latest round of NHTSA testing. The Honda CR-Z received a four-star overall rating, while the Mini Cooper has not been rated yet.
