WASHINGTON — The 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan earned the top five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Odyssey received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

Honda has made structural improvements to the redesigned Odyssey and uses a new type of side airbag said to provide additional protection in oblique or offset crashes.

The 2014 Odyssey also earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning "good" scores in all crash tests, including the small overlap front and moderate overlap front crash tests.

In the moderate overlap front crash test, the forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph. The small overlap front crash test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

"The 2014 Odyssey is the only minivan to earn the highest possible rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, including a top score of good in the new small overlap front test, and the NHTSA five-star overall vehicle score for 2014," said American Honda Motor Co. in a statement on Tuesday.

Standard safety and driver assistance technology on the Odyssey includes vehicle stability assist with traction control, antilock brakes and six airbags.

The Odyssey competes with the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country, Kia Sedona, Nissan Quest and Toyota Sienna. The 2014 Sedona and Sienna also earned a five-star rating in federal crash tests.

Edmunds says: If you're a minivan shopper who makes safety a priority, the 2014 Honda Odyssey should be one of the minivans at the top of your list.
