WASHINGTON The 2014 Ford Explorer SUV earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Explorer received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The ratings apply to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the 2014 Explorer.

The 2014 Explorer received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, including the moderate overlap front crash test. The forces in the test are similar to those that would result from a frontal offset crash between two vehicles of the same weight, each going just under 40 mph.

The Explorer is equipped with standard side curtain airbags that cover all three rows, electronic stability control and antilock brakes. Inflatable seatbelts are optional in second-row outboard seats.

Competitors to the Explorer include the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Highlander.
