LONDON — The 2014 Fiat 500L is the subject of a new rap song that's grabbing lots of attention for its unvarnished look at the joys and woes of motherhood.
No question, "The Motherhood' feat. Fiat 500L" is not your typical new-car promotional video. It is the work of Fiat's arm in the United Kingdom.
Forget speed, style and glamour and all the usual things automakers like to promote. Fiat U.K., this time, is going with a different theme: a pretty young mom and all the sticky, tiring mess associated with looking after young kids.
"Word to all the mothers out there. This one goes out to you.... 'The Motherhood feat. Fiat 500L' is dedicated to all those women who have to be all things to all people and live it large on a daily basis," said Fiat U.K.
The video opens with a cup of food being hurled to the floor and a baby chortling. The camera then pans across a table strewn with the aftermath of a gooey baby meal, toys and more.
We're then in a living room with two young kids, more toys and the mother with a baby on her lap.
"This is my crib and these are my babes, my lithesome body has somewhat changed," she sings, in time with a simple yet infectious rap beat.
We're then onto several verses describing, among other things, breast feeding, infant defecation, sleep deprivation, diaper rashes, thongs, orgasm faking, even episiotomy stitches.
The mom says she has now "swapped my sexy handbag for a snot-stained sack."
She would also "swap both kidneys just to get some rest."
While all this is going on, the 500L is in the background as a bit player, but the message is clear: For tired, hard-pressed moms with a lot on their hands, Fiat's new compact wagon is there to help take away the stress.
Following its U.S. debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, Fiat's 500L comes to the U.S. in mid-2013.
Here and now, Fiat does have a minor Web hit going, which makes for a distinctly promising start.
Edmunds says: Great video, great tune. Let's hope the 500L is in the same league when it bows.
