AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The base 2014 Dodge Durango 2WD V6 returns 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, an improvement over the outgoing model, Chrysler told Edmunds on Thursday.

The fuel economy numbers on the Durango are being closely watched, since all 2014 models feature a new standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2013 Dodge Durango with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission returns 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The EPA has not yet posted official fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Durango on its Web site.

Chrysler says the 2014 Dodge Durango with a 5.7-liter V8 engine and rear-wheel-drive returns 14 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. The 2014 Durango with the V8 engine and all-wheel drive earns 14/22 mpg city/highway.

The 2013 Durango with a 5.7-liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission returns 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

In comparison, the 2014 Ford Explorer, one of Durango's chief competitors, returns 17/24 mpg city/highway when equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse, another Durango competitor, returns 17/24 mpg city/highway, when equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, says the EPA.

Fuel economy is critical to buyers in this SUV segment, even though gas prices have declined since last year at this time.

The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Friday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. at $3.54 versus $3.71 a year ago.

The base 2014 Dodge Durango SXT starts at $30,790, reflecting no increase over the 2013 model, but Chrysler has increased prices on the high-end 2014 Dodge Durango R/T and Citadel.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Dodge Durango's new eight-speed transmission nudges it ahead of last year's fuel economy numbers and gives the SUV a slight advantage over some of the competition.
