DETROIT — General Motors offered a ballpark price estimate on its 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV on Tuesday, saying the car will be "priced under $25,000 with tax incentives." The Spark EV will go on sale next summer. It is being shown at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

That means the Spark EV is likely to start at around $32,500 before a federal tax incentive and not including the car's destination charge. GM did not announce specific pricing for the Spark EV, including a destination charge.

A federal tax credit is good for $7,500, while some states, such as California, may provide as much as $2,500 for the purchase of the Spark EV.

Pricing on the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV appears to be competitive against the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i. The 2012 Nissan Leaf starts a $36,050, including an $850 destination charge. The 2012 Mitsubishi i starts at $29,975, including an $850 destination charge. The 2013 pricing on Leaf and i have not been announced.

"In addition to previously announced markets including California and South Korea, Spark EV will also go on sale in participating dealerships throughout Oregon, Canada and other global markets," GM said on Tuesday.

The Spark EV puts GM on a more competitive footing with Nissan, which already sells the electric Leaf, as well as niche automakers such as Tesla, which sells the Roadster and is readying the Model S sedan. Ford announced earlier that it plans an all-electric version of the Ford Focus beginning next year.

The Spark also will be in the vanguard of other electric vehicles planned for the U.S. from Mitsubishi, Toyota and Kia, among others.
