DETROIT — The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic will be available in new limited-edition colors, including Deep Magenta Metallic, as Chevrolet noted on Monday that pink is "a lasting trend."
The magenta shade, which is described by the automaker as a "chromatic plum," will be available from August through October.
The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic with magenta paint costs $18,585, including an $825 destination charge and $990 for a package that includes the Deep Magenta paint, a sunroof, MyLink radio and foglamps. The package requires the Sonic LT trim level.
Following the Deep Magenta Metallic, the Chevrolet Sonic will be offered in Cool Blue, a "grayish, dirty blue. The blue shade will be available on the Sonic from November until March. Dragon Green will be added to the lineup as a permanent addition in the first quarter of 2014.
"When it came time to replace Inferno Orange, the design team realized pink was a lasting trend and after the success of Chevrolet Spark's Techno Pink, wanted to bring a more chromatic tone to showroom floors," said GM in a statement.
GM said the magenta shade was inspired by "fashion runways, consumer products and high-end furniture galleries."
Interestingly, Chrysler issued a color report on Monday that said its customers are sticking to "traditional colors," including "variations of black, white and silver."
The automaker said the subdued shades were its most popular car colors through July for the 2013 model year, despite the fact that it offers such eye-popping choices as Detonator Yellow Clear Coat and Rock Lobster Clear Coat.
Black Clear Coat is the favorite among Dodge buyers, the report said, while Bright White Clear Coat is the top choice for Jeep customers. Viper GTS Blue is the top pick for SRT Viper brand buyers.
Edmunds says: Chevrolet picks a lipstick shade for the 2014 Sonic, after having good luck with pink in the past.
