DETROIT — All versions of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 have earned the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The regular and double-cab versions of the pickup trucks recently earned the top safety distinction.

The 2014 crew-cab models of the trucks also received a five-star overall score.

"All cab configurations of the Silverado and Sierra 1500 series now have the highest possible overall vehicle score," said General Motors in a statement on Friday. "These models are the first pickup trucks to receive the five-star NHTSA overall vehicle score for safety since the implementation of more rigorous requirements for the 2011 model year."

The Silverado and Sierra earned five stars in the frontal crash test and five stars in the side crash test. They earned four stars in the rollover crash test.

The GM trucks compete with the Ford F-150, Nissan Titan and Ram 1500.
