WASHINGTON — The updated 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earned the top five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Malibu earned a five-star rating in NHTSA's frontal crash test, a five-star rating in the side crash test and a four-star rating in the rollover crash test, according to Safercar.gov.

In testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Malibu earned "good" ratings in every category tested thus far.

"Safety is an increasingly important consideration for new vehicle buyers, especially for those in the midsize segment," said Gay Kent, GM director of vehicle safety and crashworthiness, in a statement.

Malibu competitors include the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat.
