WASHINGTON The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze small car has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Cruze received five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The 2014 Cruze received "good" ratings in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, but only a "marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test. The test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

An Enhanced Safety package is optional on Cruze LT, Diesel, Eco and LTZ models and includes side blind zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert and rear park assist. It is priced at $790.

The Cruze competes with the 2014 Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3.
