TORRANCE, California — The base 2013 Toyota RAV4 LE starts at $24,145, including an $845 destination charge, reflecting a $650 price increase over the outgoing model.

The redesigned 2013 RAV4 goes on sale in early January.

Toyota's new strategy to equip all 2013 RAV4s with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission enabled it to price even the most expensive 2013 model under $30,000. In comparison, the top-of-the-line 2012 Toyota RAV4 with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, five-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive starts at $31,305, including an $845 destination charge.

The new top-of-the-line 2013 Toyota RAV4 Limited all-wheel-drive model with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission starts at $29,255, including shipping.

The 2013 RAV4 is available in three trim levels: LE, XLE and Limited. The midrange 2013 RAV4 XLE starts at $25,135, including shipping.

Standard equipment on the base 2013 RAV4 includes color-keyed door handles, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, a color-keyed rear spoiler and a 6.1-inch display audio unit with integrated back-up camera. The 2013 RAV4 Limited gets a standard power liftgate, premium seating, an eight-way power driver seat with memory and heated front seats.

Toyota's new RAV4 is more expensive than two of its chief competitors, the 2013 Honda CR-V and the 2013 Ford Escape. But it is cheaper than the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe.

The 2013 Honda CR-V LX with two-wheel drive starts at $23,625, including an $830 destination charge. The 2013 RAV4 is $520 more expensive than the 2013 CR-V.

Ford's 2013 Escape S with front-wheel drive starts at $23,295, including an $825 destination charge. The 2013 RAV4 is $850 more expensive than the 2013 Escape.

Hyundai's 2013 Santa Fe Sport with front-wheel drive starts at $25,275, including an $825 destination charge. The 2013 Santa Fe Sport is $1,130 more expensive than the 2013 RAV4.

Edmunds says: The redesigned 2013 Toyota RAV4 gets a relatively modest price increase, upping the ante in its super-competitive segment.
