TORRANCE, California — The 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited took a high-tech step toward differentiating itself from the competition with the advent of optional Qi wireless charging.

Toyota said on Wednesday that in-console Qi wireless charging is now part of an options package that bundles dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams and a pre-collision system.

The package is priced at $1,750, according to the Toyota.com vehicle configurator.

Toyota said it is the world's first application of Qi wireless in-car charging. It is available in both gasoline and hybrid versions of the Avalon Limited.

The 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited is a midrange model that starts at $42,195, including a $795 destination charge. It is on sale now.

Qi (pronounced "chee") is not yet a household word. It refers to a standard for wireless charging, according to the Wireless Power Consortium. Qi is Chinese for "vital energy."

"The idea behind Qi is simple," said the Wireless Power Consortium in a statement on its Web site. "All devices with the Qi logo will work with all Qi chargers. That's it. No need for separate chargers, no need for cables, and no need for adapters when traveling. Qi is a global standard — this means that your device can be charged wirelessly wherever you are."

The Avalon's wireless charging pad is integrated into a lid in the center console. The system is enabled via a switch beneath the lid.

"Charging is as simple as placing the phone upon the lid's high-friction surface," said Toyota in a statement.

Toyota notes that Qi wireless charging is now integrated into 34 mobile phone models, including the LG Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X.

However, computer-industry experts note that while more than 100 vendors have joined the Wireless Power Consortium and its standards efforts, notably missing is Apple.
