WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California — Porsche is the highest-ranked brand for the ninth straight year in a row, while the 2013 Range Rover SUV ranked 1st among all nameplates, according to the 2013 J.D. Power APEAL Study.

The Ranger Rover win marks the first time a model outside the large premium car segment has won the nameplate honor.

Ram is the highest-ranked non-premium nameplate, the study said.

General Motors turned in an impressive performance in the study, with the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Sonic and Chevrolet Avalanche earning segment awards.

The Volkswagen Group dominated the segment awards with five nameplates, including the Audi Allroad, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen GTI and Volkswagen Passat.

The Smart brand came in last in the annual ranking.

Ford and Nissan brands each received two model awards. They were the Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty and the Ford Mustang. Nissan won for the Nissan Armada and Murano.

Also receiving awards are the BMW 5 Series, Dodge Charger, Fiat 500, Honda Odyssey, Kia Soul, Lexus LS, Lincoln MKZ, Mazda CX-5 and Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.

The APEAL study is based on responses from more than 83,000 consumers who bought or leased 2013 vehicles.

The study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of 77 vehicle attributes. The responses were gathered between February and May.

Edmunds says: Kudos to the winners and a reminder to consumers that this is a valuable piece of information as you shop for a new car or truck.
