WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 532 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks because of a defective windshield defrosting system, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"In the affected vehicles, the coolant bypass valve may stick in a position that does not allow coolant to flow into the heater core," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Without a properly working windshield defrosting system, a buildup of moisture or ice could limit the driver's ability to see, increasing the risk of a crash."

Chrysler said the recall campaign affects 498 vehicles in the U.S. and 34 in Canada. The automaker said more than one-third of the vehicles are still in dealer hands.

Chrysler said it is unaware of any "associated complaints, accidents or injuries," linked to the recall.

The affected trucks were manufactured from June 25, 2012 through December 12, 2012. Dealers will replace the coolant valves along with an updated calibration. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

Edmunds says: If you own one of the aforementioned 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks, you'll want to take care of this problem next month to ensure proper windshield defrosting and defogging.
