WOKING, England — McLaren took the wraps off its new Formula 1 car, the McLaren MP4-28, in an unveiling on Thursday.

The MP4-28 has a close resemblance to last year's MP4-27, but has subtle engineering tweaks.

Drivers Jenson Button and Sergio Perez pulled the cover off the new car before a live audience.

Aspirations are high for the new car, with fourth-year McLaren pilot Button and newcomer Perez, to deliver another world championship in driver and constructor categories. McLaren owns 12 and eight of each, respectively.

Overtaking Red Bull and triple-defending champion Sebastian Vettel will not be easy, as technical specifications have had only minor tweaks since 2012, when McLaren finished 3rd in constructor standings behind Red Bull and Ferrari.

However, Button insisted in his remarks during the public launch that the car is greatly improved over the MP4-27.

"It is completely different to last year under the skin," the 2007 champion said. "We know the regulations haven't changed much since 2012 but it's enough to make a difference."

Technical director Sam Michael said, "The regulations are quite stable from 2012 to 2013 and what that enables you to do is to have more bandwidth to apply to the areas that you want to refine."

Last year's car had some mechanical gremlins that proved costly to Button and Lewis Hamilton, his partner the last three years.

"Obviously things like reliability are key, so you put a lot of effort into those," Michael said.

Edmunds says: Button sounded eager as a youngster on Christmas morning to get to the first test session, February 5-8 at Jerez, Spain, with the new car.
