IRVINE, California — The 2013 Mazda 3 and the 2014 Mazda CX-5 have been named Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Both vehicles received the organization's highest possible crash safety rating of "good" in all frontal moderate overlap, side, rear impact and roof strength tests by the IIHS.

The two Mazdas are among 117 vehicles to earn the Top Safety Pick award.

The 2013 Mazda 3 earned a four out of five-star rating in federal crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; the 2014 Mazda CX-5 has not been rated by federal safety regulators.

NHTSA gave the 2013 Mazda 3 five out of five stars in frontal crash tests, three out of five stars in side crash tests and four out of five stars in rollover crash tests.

The NHTSA rating refers to both the five-door hatchback and four-door sedan versions of the 2013 Mazda 3.
