ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2013 Ford Fusion, 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Nissan Altima are among the safest cars of 2013, according to a new tally by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Other cars that have earned the new Top Safety Pick+ designation by the IIHS include the 2013 Acura TL, Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Kia Optima, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Suzuki Kizashi, Volkswagen Passat and Volvo S60.

"These 13 cars offer the highest level of all-around crash protection," said Adrian Lund, IIHS president, in a statement.

The Top Safety Pick+ designation applies to the coupe and sedan versions of the 2013 Honda Accord and the sedan version of the 2013 Nissan Altima.

All of the 13 cars earned good or acceptable ratings in the new IIHS small overlap crash test as well as other top marks in other IIHS evaluations.

The 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Nissan Altima also earned the top five-star overall rating in federal crash tests, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2013 Ford Fusion has not been rated by NHTSA.

Edmunds says: Consumers who are in the market for a new car get some critical safety information from a well-respected source. But the grading is still incomplete on the 2013 Ford Fusion as we wait for federal crash-test results.
