WASHINGTON — The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid earned the top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi earlier was named a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

NHTSA said the Fusion Energi earned five stars in the frontal crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

In comparison, the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid earned a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, while the 2013 Chevrolet Volt earned five stars.

"The Fusion Energi combines the highest possible safety ratings from NHTSA and great fuel economy, two things we know customers are looking for in their vehicles," said Steve Kenner, global director of the Ford Automotive Safety Office, in a statement.

The Fusion Energi gets a combined fuel economy rating of 100 MPGe, according to the EPA. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid gets a combined fuel economy rating of 95 MPGe, according to the EPA.
