ARLINGTON, Virginia — The redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick designation on Thursday, but has not yet been rated under the five-star crash-test program of the federal government.

The IIHS said the 2013 Fusion is rated good in the Institute's moderate overlap frontal, side, rollover and rear impact evaluations.

Some of Fusion's top rivals, including the redesigned 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Nissan Altima, have not been rated by the Institute at this point. The 2013 Accord has not been rated by the federal government. The 2013 Nissan Altima sedan earned the top five-star overall safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2013 Altima coupe has not been rated.

The redesigned 2013 Fusion joins a list of several 2013 midsize sedans to have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. They include the 2013 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Volkswagen Jetta and Passat, and Volvo C30.

Edmunds says: Kudos to the 2013 Ford Fusion for getting flying colors in what has become a rigorous test.
