AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler is recalling approximately 270 2013 Fiat 500e electric vehicles to replace bolts that secure the vehicles' half shafts, the automaker said on Wednesday.

The issue is unrelated to the 500e's electric powertrain, Chrysler said.

Owners will receive free rental vehicles while their 500es are being repaired.

"Half shafts transfer torque from a vehicle's gearbox to its wheels," said Chrysler in a statement posted on its Web site. "An investigation was launched after Chrysler Group learned a customer's vehicle exhibited power loss. Engineers discovered two assembly steps had not been properly completed, creating a condition that could lead to half shaft separation."

The automaker said it is unaware of any related accidents or injuries.

No information about the Fiat 500e recall has been posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls in the U.S.

Chrysler says owners are being contacted. Vehicles on dealer lots also are affected. Chrysler said it will advise NHTSA when the "precise recall population is determined."

Edmunds says: Chrysler said it will contact owners directly, but if you own the 2013 Fiat 500e and haven't heard anything, contact Chrysler's customer service department at 1-800-247-9753.
