WASHINGTON — Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 3,837 2013-'14 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid cars to fix gearbox control module corrosion that could lead to a sudden loss of power while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Due to gearbox fluid additives, the control module within the gearbox may corrode," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "The deposits from this corrosion may cause an electrical short and result in a stall-like condition.

"This sudden loss of power while driving increases the risk of a crash."

The affected cars were built from October 2012 through October 2013.

Volkswagen told federal safety regulators that it is not aware of any such failures in the U.S.

"However, failures have been reported in foreign markets," Volkswagen said in documentation filed with the federal government. "In an abundance of caution, Volkswagen is recalling all affected vehicles worldwide to address this issue."

All other vehicle systems, such as the engine, steering and brakes remain unaffected and fully operational, the company said.

Volkswagen dealers will replace the gearbox oil with a non-corrosive version. The recall has begun. Owners can contact Volkswagen at 1-800-893-5298.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2013-'14 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, it's time to make an appointment with your dealer to get this fixed.
