DETROIT — General Motors is recalling 1,658 2013-'14 Chevrolet Sonics because potentially faulty fuel tank strap welds could lead to a fire risk.

"If the strap bracket separates, the fuel tank would rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank shield," wrote Alan Adler, a GM spokesman, in response to an Edmunds query on Monday. "Customers may hear a rattling or scraping noise.

"If the fuel tank shield and fuel filler neck do not support the fuel tank, it may separate from the vehicle. If punctured and there is a source of ignition, a fire may occur."

GM says it knows of no customer complaints, crashes, injuries or fires resulting from this issue.

The recall includes 1,558 vehicles in the U.S. and 100 cars in Canada.

GM discovered the problem at the Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan.

Most of the recalled vehicles are in dealer stock, according to the automaker.

GM did not specify a start date for the recall. Chevrolet dealers will inspect the bracket straps and make any necessary repairs. Owners can contact GM at 1-866-694-6546.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not posted any information about the Sonic recall on its Web site. Due to a lapse in federal government funding during the shutdown, there is no updated recall information submitted by automakers on the Web site.

Edmunds says: Expect this problem with the Sonic to be resolved quickly, since many of the cars are in dealer stock. But if you own a 2013-'14 Sonic and notice a problem, get the car into your dealership as soon as possible.
