WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 2,949 2012 Buick Veranos, Chevrolet Cruzes and Chevrolet Sonics because the driver's front airbag may not deploy in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The driver side frontal airbag has a shorting bar which may intermittently contact the airbag terminals," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the bar and terminals are contacting each other at the time of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal airbag, that airbag will not deploy, increasing the driver's risk of injury."

GM dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil. GM has not set a recall date. Owners can contact GM at 1-866-694-6546.

Edmunds says: It's a waiting game for parts at this point, so all you can do is sit tight until you get your recall notification.
