WASHINGTON — Chrysler is recalling 780,000 2010-'14 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans because an overheated switch may result in a vehicle fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The affected minivans are equipped with third-row power window vents. The switch is located on the driver's door.

"The affected vehicles may experience overheating of the vent window switch in the driver's door armrest," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "An overheated switch may result in a vehicle fire."

Chrysler said it found a link "between short circuits and beverage spills on the vent switch, as well as direct exposure to moisture from rain, snow or car washes" in a statement posted on its Web site.

The short circuits may cause overheating. The automaker said "known incidents total 36."

The affected minivans were built between August 25, 2010 and October 31, 2013.

An estimated 644,850 of the recalled minivans are in the U.S. The rest are in Canada, Mexico and outside the NAFTA region.

Chrysler dealers will replace the vent window switch with a newer version. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Edmunds says: In the meantime, owners can visit their dealers now to have the vent switches disconnected. Chrysler said this will eliminate "any risks" associated with the recall.
