WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a "recall query" into 51,962 2009-'12 Hyundai Elantra Touring vehicles in the U.S. for possible headliner bracket detachment.

Federal safety regulators say the affected Elantra Touring vehicles have a similar support bracket design and layout to the 2011-'13 Hyundai Elantras recalled in March.

"Like the Elantra vehicles built before the recall, the Elantra Touring model headliner does not contain reinforced bracket attachments," said NHTSA.

In March 2013, Hyundai recalled approximately 186,254 2011-'13 Elantras in the U.S. After that time, Hyundai began using headliners with reinforced bracket attachments in the Korea-built Elantra vehicles.

"During a side-impact crash, a metal support bracket attached to the headliner may be displaced downward by a deploying side curtain airbag," said NHTSA in its summary of the recall query. "The edge of the metal bracket may cause a laceration injury to an occupant seated near the bracket."

NHTSA said it has received no reports of complaints, crashes or injuries linked to the recall query.

Hyundai Motor America did not respond immediately to an Edmunds query asking for reaction.

Edmunds says: Such an action sometimes precedes a vehicle recall, but the Elantra Touring has not been recalled at this point.
