WASHINGTON — Subaru is recalling an estimated 215,000 2005-'09 Subaru Outback and Legacy vehicles in cold-weather states for brake line corrosion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash."

The affected vehicles are currently or formerly registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

The affected vehicles were manufactured from December 2003 through April 2009.

"Please note we have not had one incident of this occur in the field," wrote Michael McHale, a Subaru of America spokesman, in an e-mailed message to Edmunds.

Subaru dealers will inspect the vehicles. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected area will be rust-proofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rust-proofing with anti-corrosion wax.

Subaru has not announced a date for the recall. Owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2005-'09 Subaru Outback or Legacy, be aware that a recall is pending.
