EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:
Overall
The STS is a comfortable car in the old-school tradition of American luxury -- which means it is a very comfortable interstate cruiser. But it isn't as boatlike as Cadillacs of old either. That said, those who want high-performance and cornering prowess should look elsewhere.
DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS
Dynamics
We expected more from the STS's V8 engine and the transmission didn't always react to the drivers' whims on-schedule. Steering feel is light and uninvolving. Handling is safe, but nothing more. The nose of the car bobs a bit too readily under braking. This is not a "driver's car" -- it's a cruiser. A plus for some is the availability of all-wheel drive.
Comfort
The ride is soft, quiet and plush, but the body doesn't float excessively. Seat space and comfort are quite good. Spending a long time behind the wheel on a cross-country trip would be easy in this car.
Function
The functional aspects of the STS are a mixed bag. We always appreciate volume and tuning knobs on a stereo, but these are small and close-set to the panel. The automatic climate control works fantastic and has a great display, but the buttons that control it are too numerous, too small and compressed together. The multifunction trip computer has a lot of capability (like a tire pressure display -- which we love), but the controls are cryptic and some settings are absent. The trunk is enormous but the mirrors are small. The guage layout is overly basic, but the head-up display option really grew on us.
Design/Build Quality
The exterior design is smooth and uncluttered, but the Cadillac family look with its dominant front grille is so strong that the STS looks a bit too similar to the new CTS. The interior design is anything but adventurous, with simple shapes and straight lines. But tasteful materials are used, and that means a minimum of chrome, generous amounts of rich leather, convincing brushed-aluminum and sparingly used wood dash inserts that really look like high-quality wood. If only the switchgear gave off the same quality impression.
Comfortable
Lots of space, soft seats and a compliant suspension add up to a comfortable ride.
Luxurious
A loaded STS gives off the traditional American luxury vibe: Soft leather seats, soft ride, very quiet.
Daily Commuter
If you have a big enough parking space and don't mind pouring gas in it, the comfort of this Cadillac makes longer commutes easy to tolerate.
