Well, they don't all have gasket problem. But it's a known problem, and reported often in Cadillac forums. Our 2005 has had several problems. Heat did not work until turned up to 80 or higher. Replaced two or three 'servos' (electric motors that open/close flaps) and the dash display/control head (three times in shop). It worked ok for about a year, it's now doing it again. The head gasket problem is there for all Northstars. In about 2000 or so, Cadillac did some minor redesign, they changed the thread count, and I think increased the length of the head bolts. This supposedly helped the problem. But, this last guy has a 2001, so it is still there. The problem is this is an alumium engine and head. Ok, I don't have a direct answer. But I need to pull the entire glove box on my wife's 2005 Deville to put a 6-disc CD changer in there - had to get to the wire that connects the changer, which is in back of the glove box. Ok, on older Cadillacs you could not see the Tranny life oil % unless you went into the diagnostic mode. Sometime, they took the coolant temp display off, and put the tranny % on in its place. In general the tranny life does not drop like the oil life. Staying at 100% is normal. In the 97 service manual I think it says somethink like it will stay at 100% unless ... Read More

Transmission life indicator has stayed at 100% since this car was purchased over two years ago. I asked at dealership if replacing the whole message board would correct this problem and the response was they were unsure why the transmission life was not dropping and didn't know if replacing the message board would solvie the problem. From 95 thru 99 they are essentially about the same. There was some re-design done for 2000 on the Northstar motor. To make it run on regular gas, and different thread and longer headbolts to try to keep the head gaskets from failing so much. 2000 thru 2005 all about the same. Well, I can't remember a check engine light on any of my wife's Cadillac, but a while back her 2005 Deville turned on the Air Bag light and displayed an error. I went into Diagnoistic mode and cleared all the codes and the error light went out, then quickly came back on. When I took it in, the problem was the front impact sensor was bad. We had a 95 until about 35,000 miles and a 1997 until about 45,000 miles (?), and the current 2005 (base model with a LOT of options) has about 53,000 miles and the seats are in much, much better shape than the two other cars. The 97 especially had terrible wrinkles on the left bottom side of drivers seat where you slid in/out. None of the Cadillacs had/have very comfortable seats. ... Read More

It's had a coolant leak in the 'crossover' pipe (now sure of this name, it's a solid connector on left side of the motor (actual rear of the motor) that moves coolant between the heads. My wild guess - ethenol in our gasoline. I have three cars. 2005 Cadillac, 2006 Ridgeline truck, 2007 Corvette. Each car has dropped about 2mpg, highway and city milage, since our state went to ethenol in the gas. Ethenol is a total failure, but it is totally political. Is your battery under the rear seat or under the hood? If under the rear seat, I would re-check the battery cable connections. I would also check the negative cable where it is screwed into a nut that is basically in the body just to the right of tthe battery. My 2005 needed this ground tightened down. 1) This could be as simple as a bad battery. Especially if this is the original battery. Which would be 5 or 6 years old, and has every right to die. This battery is probably under the rear seat, which you can just pull straight up at the front, and there's the battery. How much do you want to spend? At 60,000 miles, the plug and plug wires are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles, but they might something to replace. Use only the original Cadillac wires, and I would also say to use the AC plugs (or maybe they are Denso by this year) recommended for the car (platium). What are you looking to spend? 2005 Devilles are available if you look around, for around $20,000. for 34,000 mile cars still under warranty. Don't forget Cadillac has the 50k mile 48 month (I think those are the numbers) warranty standard instead of the 36 month 36k and if it is certified, I think it qualifies for the new longer powertrain warranty. Hi if you want to get a buy,,, look at your local Cadillac dealers for 2005 program cars with less than 20,000 miles with a four year 50,000 mile factory warranty asking around $25,000 dollars. 2nd CAR FOUND AND BOUGHT

Yes you are correct the performance and build quality in a Cadillac will be better. With a budget of $ 22,000 you can probably find a 2003-04 with reasonably low miles and in good condition. In my area, there are 2005 model Deville with 18,000 or so miles for $23,000. Base model with no additional options. These are obviously cars previous used for rental. But even a base Deville has a lot of things 'standard'. My advice - buy one of these from a Cadillac dealer. Get it Cadillac 'Certified'. Don't fall for any other extended warranty. I went to the auto show here in Boston last week and the only Cadillac not there was the Deville. I did look at the CTS and STS, but the one I want to buy is the Deville.
