Re: 1997 Cadillac DeVille [maz28]

The STS is just a more expensive sedan that never sold well. Isn't it a rear wheel drive? The DTS is just the Deville under a 'new' name. The CTS, I'm not sure. Wife wants a Cadillac, and wants a big 'tank'. The CTS is smaller, would be fine for me, but she's not very interested. Our small town lost its Cadillac dealer. Two days ago was in larger nearby city, ... Read More

I'm good, but not that good. A Cadiallic could have a major problem tomorrow or 10 years from now. In general, except for the head gasket and oil consumption problems, a Northstar motor is bullet proof. You can try to 'blow out the carbon' for the oil consumption, or just ignore it. Oil is cheap, even if it uses a quart every 1000 miles. A head gasket failure on a 97 ... Read More

From 95 thru 99 they are essentially about the same. There was some re-design done for 2000 on the Northstar motor. To make it run on regular gas, and different thread and longer headbolts to try to keep the head gaskets from failing so much. 2000 thru 2005 all about the same. In 2006 they changed the name from Deville to DTS and changed body style some, but underneath they are ... Read More

Do you have much money for repairs? This is a complicated car with complex electronics. Problem areas -Head gaskets leak which cause thousands to fix because heads have to be pulled and special threads put into alumium block. (2000 redesign of motor helped this problem a lot.) -1997 should have a recall on ABS brake pump. Check to see this has been done. -Solonid for 'overdrive' lockup fails, and it also ... Read More

Yes,I have the same PCM? on my 1997 Deville after running the system.I do not know what the question mark represents,I'm trying to find out,But I did repair my problem, which was an Oxygen sensor (trouble code P1139)which I did replace. If I was unable to access the on board computer and find the trouble code, that was causing the problem,I would of been at the mercy of my Cadillac dealer and you ... Read More

After holding down on the warmer and off buttons, the computer will open up and start running the various system circuits,it will stop on any trouble code that is currently present for a few seconds and then continue on,until it runs the whole system. The system will also stop on trouble codes that are history. Be sure to write down the current number code,so you will be able to look it up,and ... Read More

About 4 months ago my Service Engine Soon Light came on,on my 1997 Cadillac Deville.I found out how to access the on board computer and found the trouble code, which was causing the light to come on. The trouble code was P1139,which was the oxygen sensor located behind the catalytic converter.I purchased a new sensor and installed it. After the installation,I disconnected the positive lead to the battery and cleared the trouble ... Read More

Am finding your posts on Northstar vs Hemi helpful and informative. I currently own a 2004 Deville but have owned Chryslers in the past, most recently a 1997 LHS, with the V6, 214 HWP. I wouldn't mind owning a 300 C for a second car but at least for now Cadillac is number one with me. Am also considering a 1998 or 1999 Concours for a second car. I liked the ... Read More

A bit difficult to answer your questions in absolute terms. I have owned two Devilles, a 98 and currently a 2004. I have been satisfied with both cars. My main reasons for buying were, power from the Northstar, appearance (my 98 in gold was a real beauty), local dealership in small town. Jaguar, Lexus, and Mercedes do not have dealerships in my community. The Consumer Reports poor rating on the car ... Read More

SOME THOUGHTS ON MY 2004 DEVILLE

Traded a 98 De Ville with 39,000 miles for a 2004 De Ville with 15000 miles in July. Some observations: Car seems to loose a few mph after cruise is engaged and cruise light comes on. is this common in the current model De Ville? Some of the standard features in the 98 are not in the 2004 model, Examples include: cup holders in center arm rest, electronic trunk lock, and ... Read More

I'm back in the Cadillac ownership business. A 1997 Deville d'Elegance (sp). It's in very good to excellant shape with 64,000 miles. Want to make the wifie happy. FAILED ALTERNATOR IN 1998 CADILLAC @ 16500 MILES
Written by: bremertong on Feb 24, 2002 11:44:44 PM
The alternator has been making strange sounds in my 1998 Cadillac Deville. Dealer says a bearing is worn out and the alternator needs to be replaced. Is the alternator a common problem in the Cadillacs of the late nineties? Has anyone else had similar experiences? I have only owned the car since June 2001, it had 10800 miles at purchase. The car went into service in December 1997. It seems a ... Read More
