Today's Deal - Buick Anthem

Buick Anthem SUVs for sale near you

What Edmunds Says

Although Buick has China in mind with this midsize crossover, it will also fill an obvious hole in the automaker's U.S. portfolio.

Pros

Lighter and smaller than GM's current over-sized mid-line crossovers; smooth and quiet ride; diverse engine lineup.

Cons

The Anthem will need more cargo space than current GM midsize crossovers to compete in the segment.

What's New for 2015

The 2015 Buick Anthem will be an all-new model.

Introduction

The 2015 Buick Anthem -- its speculative moniker based on a recent trademark application ? is a midsize crossover that will slot between the tiny Encore and the three-row Enclave in Buick's lineup.

The Anthem will likely change names to something more elegant -- "Enspire" or "Envision" are among reported choices -- and would be built foremost for buyers in China. Whether the Anthem makes it to the U.S. lineup is still uncertain, but it looks like an obvious fit in Buick's slowly expanding lineup, especially given the imminent arrival of premium midsize rivals like the Lincoln MKC and Lexus NX.

The Anthem will ride atop a new GM global platform that will underpin the next-generation Equinox as well as the GMC Terrain. The redesigned Equinox/Terrain are expected to shrink slightly, so expect the Anthem to share the slimmer proportions compared to GM's current midsize SUVs.

Power will likely come from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the latter making 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, both delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission. A 3.6-liter V6 is expected to be offered as well, along with optional all-wheel drive. There is also talk of a plug-in hybrid model, a not-fantastical notion considering that the next Chevy Volt is expected to be built off the same new platform.

Look for the Buick Anthem to debut in early 2015. Check back for more on the new Anthem, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice, as it becomes available.
