Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsSmooth, eager turbo-6, as always from BMW. Makes good power everywhere on the tach. Overlapping throttle and brake at the line before launch produced the quickest times. Not just because of achieving turbo spool-up, but in this case it also caused the transmission to go into a quick-shift mode, with considerably more abrupt upshifts. Quickest time came with Dynamic Driving Control button in Sport and shift lever moved to DS. Manual shifting (with the console lever, push forward for downshifts) was a bit slower, and it upshifts for itself (at 6,800 rpm) anyway. Makes nice throttle-blip downshifts though.
Braking commentsWell-controlled nosedive and properly firm pedal. No side-to-side movement, stops nice and straight. No major brake odor until the final couple of runs. Pedal travel got a bit longer on the fifth and sixth runs. The first stop was the shortest at 117 feet. The fifth stop was longest at 123 feet, sixth and final stop was 122 feet.
Handling commentsSlalom: A surprisingly sloppy handler. The steering is intuitive enough, turns in respectably, but there's quite a bit of body roll after that along with minimal grip from the tires. An overly aggressive stability control just compounds the frustration of getting this big rig through the quick back-and-forth motions of the slalom. Skid pad: While the grip level of the X5 is nothing to brag about, this exercise at least showed that the chassis has some fun tuned in, as the tail would step out playfully during on/off throttle transitions, particularly with the stability control system switched off.
