    Same problem here, no one has ever heard our hiccup, traveling for hoidays and it hiccups again then 10 min later we get the trans fail safe warning again. Did u find a fix?

    I had the trans failsafe message appear before. Shutdown and restart cleared it. That was over a year ago. Recently it started doing it more frequently.     Yes! The problem was the regulator in the alternator. The problem was intermittent so when I had the car checked they said the alternator was fine. The problem kept recurring every few weeks. Finally a new mechanic said it had to be the alternator (which I had replaced less than a year before). I had the company that supplied the alternator test it - they had it on the bench running ...     On my 2004 X5 3.0 the dashboard brake lining warning light is on. Also the engine warning light is on. I have made the repairs but now I want to reset the dashboard warning lights.     The 4.8i should pretty much stay the same (maybe a 10 hp increase) So that means they will not replace the current 4.8 naturally aspirated with a twin turbo ?     Interesting. My Dad has an '04 X5 3.0iA that has been the absolute pinnacle of reliability. He has had the truck for just over 2 years and about 43,000 miles. It has been back to the dealer exactly 3 times: 17,000 miles -- 1st oil change 36,000 miles -- Inspection I service 41,000 miles -- Front Right Brake Caliper Seized. Front Brake pads and rotors replaced.

    Just to list the problems on this X5. Panoramic sunroof leaked. rear tail lights kept failing. drivers side seat cushion needed replacemt at I yr. Wiper arm faulty. Console cover between front seats catch faulty. Blue tooth goes wacky when near the BMW service facility. plastic rear tailgate hinge cover keeps falling off.What next? and I bought it new, have only just done 20000km (16000miles)otherwise it drives nice.

    Try New Century BMW in Alhambra. It's right on the South Pasadena line. They had at least 5 or 6 X5 3.0's for that exact same MSRP a couple weeks back. Both of the sales managers seem very open to skipping the sales floor BS. I helped my cousin lease a Z4 there a few months back and the service department is very responsive for me as well.

I was told it is because the transmission fluid is cold and thick and BMW has seen this before in the 3 series cars.     Just negotiated the purchase of a loaded 2004 X5 4.4i. Got approximately $1750 off MSRP. I attribute this more to the dealership than my negotiating skills. There are 4 BMW dealers in our "area", and this was by far the nicest, most customer-friendly one in every respect. The others all acted as if "the cars will sell themselves; we don't need you--you need us." Amazing.

    I received a similar email from the internet sales manager at Allison BMW. It applied only to in-stock vehicles (except M's). They only had X5 3.0's in stock and 2003 4.4's. I think that deal expired. I ended up ordering a 2004 4.4 from a dealership that gave me a little discount off MSRP.

    I have one on order. I got Premium Package Premium Sound Cold Weather Rear Package Heated Steering Navigation I plan to install 2 screens in the headrests and get a 6-DVD changer installed in the back, which can also play CDs and MP3s. Xenons are standard on 4.4 The standard rims are 18" on 4.4 (unless you get sport package) Sport package gives a harsher ride.

    I believe Xenons are standard equipment on the 2004 X5 4.4. Go with the Navigation System. Nice toy. Forget the Premium Sound, it upgrades a substandard sound system to just barely adequate in my opinion. Your money is better spent on the Comfort Seats.
