I do not know if it is the same thing but there have been numerous complaints regarding the plastic on the steering wheel peeling off.

Do anyone have the same problem? My 2008 X3 the plastic around the cup holder is peeling off. Is the 4 year free maintenance cover to fix that?

Hmmmm, the washer pump leaked on my 2009 X3 too. Thats the only problem I've had in almost 35,000 miles, but a failed par? unforgivable. Of course, BMW fixed it right away, and since the car still looks, feels and drives like new and actually uses less gas than it did before, I'd say the X3 is a keeper. I am leasing a BMW X3 08 model, no transmission problem. I love driving it. I was also test drive the EX model but X3 has more room and comfort. My wife's 2006 X3 has been great, and one of the most enjoyable aspects is the ability to drive it more like a sports sedan than an SUV! dwo4, I can't comment on the Suburu. As others have suggested, I also recommend a test drive of the X3, especially on a twisty country road if you are into handling and responsiveness. My wife's 2006 X3 has been great, and one of the most enjoyable aspects is the ability to drive it more like a sports sedan than an SUV! Bruce

You need to take a long test drive in both vehicles and evaluate how you are going to use it. We cross-shopped the X3 and the Forrester in 2005 and decided on the BMW- but that's not to say that Subaru doesn't build some outstanding cars and SUVs. Well, I would read up on the continuing weirdness with the X3's auto transmission, its rock hard bouncing pony ride and check the VIN on the 2008 for any big fixes. The Subarus get good marks from reviewers so I would test drive them, if at all possible, the same day along the same or similar route. The BMW dealer also said to NEVER take the X3 off roading...I don't know ... Read More

I am in the proces of looking at a new vehicle...I am looking at a BMW X3, or a new Subaru Outback Limited...which way should go..the BMW is a 2008, 2ith about 25,000 miles on it...I am really confused...any ideas out there?

FWIW people seem to be handling this problem individually. Some have said that they made a deal to turn in their malfunctioning AT for an MT or had it bought back in its entirety. I do not know for sure what is true and what is just babbling on the internet. At any rate, no one can tell me what the difference is between an actual MT and driving the AT ... Read More

Amen Brother! Just browsing through Motor Trend's SUV of the year article and looking at all the car-like SUVs out there. The new Honda CR-V takes the cake for hideous! The BMW X-3 is not much better. I quite don't understand the reasoning behind the X-3, why not just buy the BMW 3 series model and if you want performance buy the M Series. Yeah I agree with that. Still not a fan of the current X5 though. It looks fine from some angles but from others it looks as bad as the X3. The afterthought rear seats really bother me too. I noticed quite a few of the new 2007 BMW X3s are having transmission problems. Did you guys noticed anything wrong when test driving it? Or were you so focused on identifying the shortcomings of the LR2 all the while praising all the good points of the X3 that it was overlooked?

If they tried to take the X3 into the same off-road situation that a LR2 can go through then the X3 would be broken. The service advisor at my dealership is almost 6 foot 4 and he fits fine in the LR2 but he doesn't fit in the Range Sport. It all depends on your body type. I noticed you guys didn't mention the torque of the LR2, more headroom, legroom for both front & rear occupants, among many other of the features that make the LR2 a good vehicle in comparison with the new BMW X3. The dealer claims that BMW is on a multi-year refresh. I think a new body style will be due in either 2008 or 2009 (calendar.) If you look back over the way BMW has done things it is usually, what, a minimum of 5 calendar years before a major refresh. Mid course corrections are to be expected. My wife loves her X3 -- I am impressed mightily by it, too, but NOT at the MSRP. On the other hand, the lease program in May 2005 was soooo strong that a $47K version was $581 per month 36/45K with $250 down + sec dep and first month's pmt. So, what's to complain about?
