96,000 Miles and All is Well
I just took my wife's 2004 X3 2.5 to our local BMW dealer for the Inspection I service and a brake fluid flush. Absolutely no problems were detected- aside from needing front and rear wiper blades. Total cost: $358. Having said all that, the years and mileage have really taken their toll on the truck's interior and exterior: :P ;) :D

Thanks for the helpful information. My experience with BMWs has been so bad that I've only owned nine of them(and still have three). My wife's 2004 X3 has also been a disaster; it's required one warranty repair(an SRS sensor) in over 90,000 miles of gentle use. And brakes only last 60,000 miles, tires even less(48,000 miles). I hate to tell you, but you are getting seriously screwed on those repair costs. For example, you should be able to get a set of front and rear rotors from a dealer for less than $500. Long term durability depends on the maintenance the truck has received from mile 001. The inline six in the X can last over 200K; aside from normal maintenance about all you may have to replace will be the valve cover gasket and the water pump. Almost all bad reviews were on the original 2004~2006 models when equipped with sport package. Stick the warranty money into a MM account and self insure. My wife has a 2004 X3 2.5 and it has needed exactly one warranty repair-the passenger seat SRS sensor. Will mixing one new EL-42 with the 3 existing EL-42 tires cause any problems? The local tire store was telling us we really should get 4 new tires, to keep everything "balanced". Month 13, the Gloss Black with Terracotta interior 2005 BMW X3 (with nearly every option box checked) has now, just today, passed 20,000 miles. You can still see it at Smythe European's (MB dealer) website. When BMW lists "smokers package" on its list of options, it just means that it comes with a lighter and ashtray. Woop-dee-do! :P

Acquisition fees are only for leases.. You aren't leasing an '04, are you? Do you really want all of those options? If not, you'd be better off finding a new $41K MSRP '05 and getting it for around $39K... Tax, title and license fees vary by state..

I have had my 2004 X3 2.5 since September 04. With about 6,000 miles the gas mileage is 20 m.p.g.(U.S.), in 50/50 city highway driving. I was skeptical about how much better a BMW could be, when you can buy fairly competent cars for almost half the price. I own a 2004 X3, 2.5. I get 28.6 on the highway (no stopping), and 18 in the city. I live in Chicago, so the city mileage reflects a lot of gridlock. On a separate topic - I am considering getting the Ipod accessory cable to play through the stereo. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you have to go to the dealership? Cost? Worth it? Test drove one with and one without -- huge difference. The lease payment difference was about $6 per month on a 36 month 15K lease. I thought it was well worth it. I currently have a 2003 Audi allroad with the Bose "upgraded" system. A. I think the Audi system is better than the standard BMW system B. I had the same problem... the dealers know about this issue. Visit your dealer and tell them about your key problem and also tell them to look up BMW bulletin SI B 66 01 04 (dated 12/2004) to cure the problem. Basically they need to replace the antenna in the mirror. I am waiting for my replacement mirror but they made me come in for a day to "see for themselves" ... Read More

Help! I test drove an X3 2.5 yesterday 2005...loved it. Dealer said they had 5 2004 X3 3.0 fully loaded rental cars on the lot that he wanted to move. Have 7-10k on them. Price is $33,900. To lease for 39 months/15k a year/no $0 down is $525.55. Is this a good deal? Can I negotiate?

Is it at a BMW dealer? If so, ask him to fax you the vehicle history report and a CARFAX. The vehicle history report will have the warranty expiration date, options on the car, and any service done on it.. I really have no idea on price.. You probably won't find one for invoice.. Figure closer to $37.5K-$38K for a new '05. For a car with only 7K miles, it might not have had any maintenance yet.. 1st maintenance is scheduled for 15K miles.. Unless you are in a hurry, I'd wait for one to show up closer to home...
